Excessive Sweating

Some may argue that sweating is a normal bodily function, which of course is true. However for many people, excessive sweating can cause appreciable social problems and even interfere with daily living.

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term given to excessive sweating due to overactive sweat glands, and affects millions of people around the world.

It occurs mainly in the axilla (armpits), face, palms and soles of the feet.

We know certain factors, such as high temperatures or stress can increase perspiration, however they don’t cause hyperhidrosis or uncontrolled sweating. This condition tends to be inherited where an individuals body is unable to regulate its temperature. There tends to be a family history in 30-50% of cases.

Treatment for Excessive Sweating

Fortunately today we have a simple, safe and unbelievably effective treatment available, with no recovery time – Botox.

Botox still tends to be thought of as a wrinkle treatment, but is actually used to treat a number of non-cosmetic concerns, and underarm sweating is one of these.

It works by targeting sweating at its source and blocking the release of a chemical that signals the perspiration.

The questions people ask when considering a treatment are always….

How long does the procedure take? How long does it last? And does it hurt?

In general, it usually takes 20-30 minutes per treatments, lasts on average for 7 months and discomfort is minimal and of course over with before you know it!

This being said for many people this treatment is a once a year event, with pre-summer (or pre-holiday) being the selected time.

Studies have shown that 94% of people have responded with an average reduction of sweating by 83%.

So how excessive is excessive when it comes to sweating? This treatment continues to increase in popularity and appeals to a wide range of levels of sweating, men and women and lifestyles. For women one of the great things about reducing underarm sweating is being able to wear clothing they never thought possible. For men, what may be acceptable at the gym or during sporting activities, may not be so acceptable in the workplace.

Let’s face it sweating can be extremely embarrassing. Not only is there the appearance on clothing, there is the often, associated odour. Of course the more embarrassed and stressed you become the worse it gets.

Unfortunately, sweating can truly have a negative impact on an individual’s’ life, affecting everything from recreational activities and relationships through to overall confidence. Fortunately, for many, botox can be life changing.
