Botox FAQs

What is Botox?

Botox is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is a nonsurgical, physician–administered aesthetic treatment for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people 18 to 65 years of age.

How does Botox work?

Botox treats the cause of facial lines by reducing the muscle contractions that cause lines to form over time. Botox is injected directly into the underlying muscles, where it enters the nerve endings to block the release of acetylcholine, the chemical that causes muscles to contract. Once the muscles are at rest, skin becomes smoother.

How long does Botox treatment take and how long do results last?

Botox treatments take an average of 30 minutes to administer. Within two to five days your skin will start to appear younger and smoother. Each treatment is effective for up to four months.

Are there any side-effects to using Botox? I have heard the toxin can spread from the treatment area?

There has not been a confirmed serious case of the spread of toxin effect away from the injection site when Botox has been used at the recommended dosage.
